Belgard Construction in San Francisco, CA | Workshop Contractors
Workshop Contractors provides independent Belgard paver, wall, and hardscape installation across San Francisco. We’re a licensed general contractor, not a Belgard subsidiary or authorized dealer. What makes our Belgard work different here is that we engineer every patio, driveway, and retaining wall around one fact most installers miss: San Francisco’s pre-1906 timber housing sits on unreinforced brick foundations and liquefaction-prone bay fill, so the hardscape has to double as a drainage system. Call (844) 384-3361 for a free estimate.
We’ve installed Belgard Dimensions pavers, Catalina wall units, and porcelain pavers on hillside lots in Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, and across the 94111, 94112, 94114, and 94115 ZIP codes. Noel Figueroa, Owner and General Contractor, grew up watching tradesmen frame houses on his street in Ontario, California, learned construction at Chaffey College, and has spent the years since hauling base aggregate and setting wall block on slopes that would make most crews nervous. Belgard sales & service is what we do, but the part we actually care about is the base prep and drainage underneath. That’s what determines whether your patio lasts five years or thirty.
Why San Francisco Residents Choose Us for Belgard Service
Belgard makes good product. We’re not going to argue otherwise. But a paver is only as good as the base it sits on, and in San Francisco the base is the whole story. We service Belgard systems because we know the product line cold: Dimensions 12, 18, and 24 slab series, Arbel and Catalina wall blocks, Urbana stone, Bristol Valley pavers, and the Aspen and Ocean porcelain collections. We carry OEM wall caps, geogrid, and matching border units when the job calls for color and dimensional consistency.
The other reason homeowners keep calling us back is simpler than product knowledge. We’re a general contractor, which means we see how the driveway connects to the foundation, how the patio pitch affects the basement, how the retaining wall interacts with the sewer lateral. Most hardscape crews in San Francisco only know the pavers. We know what’s underneath and what’s downhill. Single-source accountability matters when your Edwardian’s basement is on the line.
Noel’s background shows up in the details: framing that’s square, drainage that actually drains, wall block that doesn’t wobble on the second course. Build it right the first time. The second time costs twice as much and nobody’s happy about it.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Solve in San Francisco
- Efflorescence and salt bloom on the foggy west side. Marine-layer moisture wicks through Belgard concrete pavers and dries on the surface, leaving white mineral deposits. It’s worse where the base was never detailed with geotextile separation. We strip the affected pavers, address the moisture path, and reset the field.
- Settlement and lippage at paver field edges on steep slopes. Noe Valley and Bernal Heights lots are notorious for compacted aggregate base losing bearing on fill or expansive clay after a wet winter. The pavers heave or drop at the transition. We re-excavate the edge zone and re-compact in lifts before resetting.
- Cracking and spalling at the top of retaining wall units. Hillside walls that drain poorly build hydrostatic pressure behind the block. Unblocked cores and missing filter fabric accelerate the damage. We rebuild the upper courses, install proper drainage, and replace the failed units with matching Belgard block.
- Drainage failures at the paver-to-flashing transition. Rear-yard patios and walkways where the base pitches toward the house instead of a yard drain are the leading cause of damp crawlspace complaints on Edwardians with full-height basement garages. We re-pitch the base and install positive drainage away from the foundation.
- Driveway base degradation from repeated vehicle load on undersized aggregate. A paver driveway in San Francisco that wasn’t built on a properly compacted open-graded base will show rutting within two winters. We remove the field, rebuild the structural section, and reset the same Belgard units if they’re still sound.
Belgard Service in San Francisco: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing about San Francisco that no neighboring city shares: the city’s 1,700-plus surviving pre-1906 Victorians and Edwardians sit on unreinforced brick foundations, and much of the city is mapped on liquefaction-prone bay fill. That means any Belgard paver driveway, patio, or walkway we build within the 94102 through 94109 ZIPs has to be detailed to move water away from that vulnerable foundation line. The hardscape is effectively a drainage and foundation-protection system, not just a surface. A paver patio in Daly City or Pacifica might be a weekend aesthetic project. In San Francisco’s flat-lot district south of Market, or on a hillside lot in the 94114, it’s the difference between a dry basement and a rotting mudsill.
We build Belgard systems with geotextile separation at the subgrade, open-graded aggregate that actually carries water, and edge restraints that don’t fail at the transition to the house. The paver pattern is the last decision, not the first.
Belgard Models & Products We Service in San Francisco
Our crews are experienced with the full Belgard concrete and porcelain line. Urgent call details: Belgard Dimensions 12, 18, and 24 slab series for driveways and patios where a modular look with tight joints is the goal. Arbel and Catalina granite-style wall blocks for retaining cuts and terraced yards. Urbana stone and Bristol Valley pavers for a more traditional European finish. And Belgard porcelain pavers in the Aspen and Ocean collections, which resist staining and hold up in the wet, foggy afternoons better than concrete in some applications.
We keep common OEM Belgard wall caps and border units ordered directly through our supplier chain rather than stocking warehouse substitutes that don’t match color and dimension. For fast turnaround on San Francisco projects, we coordinate delivery through the same regional distributor network we’ve used for years, which keeps lead times predictable when a paver field needs matching units.

AfterBelgard Service Pricing in San Francisco
Hardscape work in San Francisco costs more than flat, inland cities because the excavation is deeper, the drainage requirements are stricter, and the access is often tight. Here’s what we typically see:
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Paver Patio Installation | $4,130 – $12,980 |
| Paver Driveway Installation | $8,260 – $21,240 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,900 – $16,520 |
What drives the number: slope correction, retaining wall scope, drainage redesign, existing base removal, and access constraints on lot-line properties. A free estimate from us includes a site walk, subgrade inspection, and a written line-item quote. Call (844) 384-3361 to schedule yours.

FAQs – Belgard Construction in San Francisco
Sometimes, but not always. If the slope is under about 12 percent and the base can be benched and compacted without cutting too deep, a paver patio can work without a wall. Anything steeper usually needs a small Catalina or Arbel retaining wall to hold the cut, which means filter fabric, open-graded backfill, and proper core drainage. Call (844) 384-3361 and we’ll tell you honestly after looking at the grade.
We coordinate the delivery window with the neighbor, stage materials in the street or the front setback where possible, and carry pavers by hand or wheelbarrow through the side yard when the rear yard has no truck access. For party-wall properties, we protect the shared wall with plywood shielding and clean the site daily. No dumpster placement without a written sign-off from the adjacent owner.
They can, especially on the west side where marine-layer moisture cycles through the paver daily. Efflorescence is cosmetic and often resolves with a proper cleaning and a quality sealer. The bigger issue is what the moisture is doing to the base underneath, which is why we spec geotextile separation and positive drainage on every fog-belt install.
Patios and walkways at grade generally don’t need a permit. Driveways that change the curb cut, alter drainage patterns, or exceed a certain area typically do. Retaining walls over three feet almost always need engineering and a permit. We handle the paperwork and inspections as part of the scope.
Belgard concrete pavers are generally more consistent in dimension and color, easier to replace individual units, and cost roughly 30 to 50 percent less installed than comparable flagstone or bluestone. Natural stone has a one-of-a-kind look but moves more and stains differently. For hillside yards where base stability matters, we lean toward Belgard Dimensions with a structural base.
