Unilock Construction in Palo Alto, CA | Workshop Contractors
We provide independent Unilock paver driveway, patio, and walkway construction across Palo Alto, and the one thing that makes our work here different is this: we know the city’s tree-protection and design-review process well enough to plan a paver job that passes inspection the first time. Palo Alto is a built-out city where mature oaks, redwoods, and tight Eichler lots mean every square foot of hardscape has to be thought through before we cut the first base lift. Call (844) 384-3361 to schedule a free estimate, and we’ll walk your property with an eye on the roots, the grade, and the permit path before we talk pavers.
Why Palo Alto Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service
We have built Unilock paver work across Palo Alto long enough to know that the paver is rarely the problem. The base is. The edge is. The drainage is. And in this city, the tree root you didn’t account for is the one that lifts a driveway three years later. Noel Figueroa, our owner and general contractor, learned the fundamentals at Chaffey College and has spent the decades since working on everything from ground-up residential builds to full commercial tenant improvements. Around a job site, he is known for framing that is square, tile that lines up at the grout joint, and trim that actually meets the corner. That same eye carries into our hardscape work. We are an independent Unilock service provider, not a dealer program shop, so we answer to the homeowner and the city inspector on every job we run in Palo Alto’s 94301, 94302, 94303, and 94304 ZIP codes. Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Palo Alto
- Edge restraint failure and paver spread on driveways. We see this most often on older Palo Alto driveways where the original base was compacted in lifts that were too thick for the city’s clay-heavy soils. The edge restraint lets go under vehicle load, and the outside course of pavers starts walking toward the street. We reset the field with proper shallow-lift compaction and a new edge restraint that actually holds.
- Efflorescence and joint-sand washout after the first rainy season. Palo Alto’s dry season concentrates exterior work between May and October, but the winter rains expose every shortcut taken during that window. When polymeric sand was installed too wet or over a poorly drained sub-base, the joints turn chalky white and erode. We remove the failed sand, correct the drainage where we can, and re-sand with Unilock’s own polymeric product.
- Settling and lippage at garage aprons and driveway transitions. A paver field that meets an existing concrete slab or garage floor without a proper transition beam will lip within a couple of seasons. This is a recurring call in the post-war ranch and Eichler neighborhoods where the original concrete driveway was partially overlaid with pavers years ago. We cut a clean transition and re-set the affected courses so the edge stops catching tires and heels.
- Faded or chipped surface on older Brussels Block and Paverstone fields. Many Palo Alto homes have Unilock fields installed before current compaction standards were widely followed. Where a mature oak or redwood has pushed shallow roots under the base, the surface shows the stress. We evaluate whether the base can be salvaged and the surface pavers replaced, or whether the underlying failure requires a full re-excavation.
- Tree-root heave under paver fields. This is the most Palo Alto-specific failure we deal with. Protected oaks and redwoods put lateral roots exactly where we want to place a patio or driveway, and when the base is shallow, the roots win. We plan layouts around root-protection zones and, where work is permitted, re-compact the base to resist what the roots will keep trying to do.
Unilock Service in Palo Alto: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Palo Alto’s tree-protection ordinance covers heritage and protected trees, and the planning department can require a certified arborist report and a root-protection plan before exterior work near a protected canopy. On many 94306 lots, that means the paver layout has to be set back from the root zone before a single base lift is dug. We have worked projects where the drip line of a mature oak dictated the entire shape of a patio, and the design review board cared more about the root plan than the paver pattern. A generic Unilock contractor who shows up and starts excavating is taking a risk the homeowner doesn’t see until the stop-work notice arrives. We plan for that from the first site walk. Most of our Palo Alto service area work starts with a conversation about what the city will ask for, not what the paver catalog shows.
On a mid-century ranch off Louis Road in 94306, the homeowners had a 30-year-old Brussels Block driveway that had heaved where a mature oak’s roots pushed under the west edge, and the pavers were spreading into the street apron. We pulled the affected field, re-excavated and re-compacted the base in shallow lifts, re-set the edge restraint, and re-installed matching Brussels Block with fresh polymeric sand, keeping all excavation outside the arborist-marked root-protection zone. The driveway drained correctly through the first winter rains and the transition at the garage slab stopped lipping.
Unilock Models & Products We Service in Palo Alto
We work with the Unilock lines that dominate Palo Alto’s residential hardscape: Brussels Block, Paverstone, Copthorne, and Town Hall. If you need Unilock service in West Menlo Park, we bring the same product expertise across the area. For anything visible or load-bearing, we use Unilock’s own pavers, edge restraints, and polymeric joint sand, because matching the existing field matters more than saving a few dollars per square foot. On a settled or heaved driveway, we will re-level and re-sand rather than tear out a sound paver field. Full replacement only happens when the base itself has failed or the pattern is no longer available. We keep common Brussels Block and Paverstone replacement stock ordered in advance for Palo Alto jobs, so a repair doesn’t stall for a week waiting on a pallet.

FAQs – Unilock Construction in Palo Alto
No. We are an independent hardscape and Palo Alto General Contractor crew that builds with Unilock products. We are not manufacturer-affiliated or part of any dealer program. That keeps our recommendations honest, because we don’t answer to a sales quota or an authorized-installer program.
Yes. For anything visible or load-bearing, we use Unilock’s own pavers, edge restraints, and polymeric joint sand. Matching the existing field on a Palo Alto driveway or patio matters more than cutting cost per square foot. We’ll always tell you if an alternative makes sense, but we default to OEM.
A paver patio installation typically takes three to six working days, and a driveway replacement five to eight, depending on access and whether the city requires an arborist report before we begin. The report and any design-review step add time before construction starts, and we build that into the schedule up front. Call (844) 384-3361 for a timeline specific to your lot.
We service and install Brussels Block, Paverstone, Copthorne, and Town Hall across Palo Alto and provide Emerald Lake Hills Unilock service as well. If you have an older Unilock field in another line, we’ll match it if the paver is still available. If the pattern has been discontinued, we’ll tell you before we quote so you can decide between a partial repair and a full re-pave.
Most driveway repairs fall between $5,000 and $14,000 when the base is compromised, but a smaller edge-restraint fix or section re-level can run far less. The Palo Alto-specific variable is tree-root proximity: if we have to stay outside a root-protection zone, the layout and excavation change. Call (844) 384-3361 for an exact quote, free of charge.
Yes, we offer driveway sealing for Unilock pavers, and in Palo Alto it is worth it for older fields that see full sun in summer and rain in winter. Sealer slows efflorescence and joint-sand washout. It is not a fix for a failing base, though, so we will not sell you sealing when your real problem is root heave or poor drainage. Get the base right first, then seal.
